Two days later, Leah was woken at dawn and shooed away from camp with the instruction not to return for several hours. Paige and Claire offered to keep her company after Sophie practically ripped her hair out from running around shouting orders.

“I can’t come with you, Leah, or else your party will look awful! I have to be in charge. Have you ever seen a centaur try to decorate? It’s an atrocity! They’re lucky I—No, Liam! You can’t put orange next to green, are you insane?” Sophie stomped toward the blond centaur who threw the fabrics on the ground and his hands in the air.

“Come on,” Paige had said with an armful of empty baskets. “We’ll go to the garden for a bit.”

Dominick stood in the center of the clearing, arms crossed and a smug grin on his face. He watched the three girls leave and gave Leah a wink when she looked over her shoulder at him.

They’d spent the last two days pretending as though nothing had happened when around the campsite, but stealing kisses in the trees when they were alone. They were always sweet and short encounters. To Leah’s dismay, this only left her wanting more, and unfortunately quite incapable of catching wrists with her training dagger or hitting the target with an arrow.

“What’s a centaur feast like, anyway?” Leah asked as Lake Serena came into view fifteen minutes later.

“Loud.” Paige sighed. “So, so loud.”

“What is this for, again?” Claire asked. Her skirt snagged on a twig and she growled, ripping it free. “Gods almighty, why don’t they build a path?”

“It’s my welcome feast. I’ll be an official part of the tribe after tonight.” Leah lifted her chin and squared her shoulders.

“And if you change your mind?”

“I won’t, Claire.”

Her sister hadn’t given up the battle to get Leah back to Starling, and Leah hadn’t given up her effort to convince Claire to stay. She tried to be grateful for whatever time she did have with Claire, knowing that this time she would at least have a proper chance to say goodbye. But she held onto the hope that she wouldn’t have to.

Paige dropped the baskets on the ground and examined the garden. “Don’t pick anything yet. We’ll wait as long as possible before heading back. The fresher, the better.”

Leah removed her shoes and cast them aside, then stepped onto the soil between the rows of peppers and tomatoes. The earth was cool on her feet. She wiggled her toes into the loose soil.

“Ew, Leah. You’re going to get all dirty.”

“That’s literally the point, Claire. I like the dirt. It’s full of life.” Leah smiled as her toes disappeared. She knelt down, thankful that she’d chosen black tights and a dark green tunic today, and lifted a leaf on the pepper plant. “Aha! How did I know you’d be there?”

A little leaf drake stared up at her, its tongue probing into a flower on the plant. Its emerald-green skin appeared smooth, but when one had finally allowed Leah to hold it, she realized it had thousands and thousands of tiny scales.
